Printing techniques
Printers today have come a long way; earlier offset printing had its limitations, however with digital printing solutions available, and with the onset of specialized printing techniques like Giclee. There are basically two major methods that are used to create canvas prints, the first method is called Dye Sublimation and is similar in technique to thermal printing, dye sublimation ensures the colors are as close to the original, an additional advantage of thermal sublimation is that the colors are resistant to strong lights and temperature variations.
The second technique for printing on canvas is using inkjet printers, the name Giclee is used for inkjet printing, inkjet printers add a more realistic touch to the canvas prints, however inkjet colors fade if they are exposed to light and temperature extremes over a long period of time.
Advanced scanning techniques and multicolor detection are utilized for Giclee canvas printing and the image is processed in the computer in order to capture every shade of the original artwork. In Giclee canvas printing, the digital image that has to be printed is scanned in the computer and printed on the canvas using a wide format printer. The wide format printer uses water-soluble dye based inks which are devised specifically for fine art production.
Finally, after drying, the canvas is stretched and fastened over wooden bars. Printing experts believe that Giclee canvas prints have excellent color accuracy that enhances the beauty of the printed images. The important aspect of printing is that the color scheme should remain accurate through the entire processing and serve the needs of customers.

Printing Guy asked:
Why has digital printing become so popular? When do I need to use digital printing? There are three main reasons people have come to use digital printing.
Customers ordering lower and lower quantities. In our world of change these days information needs to be revised constantly. This has meant more obsolescence in printed products and lost $$$ in printed inventory being thrown away. This has led the trend towards print users reducing quantities ordered so they can choose to change or update information as needed.
Faster turntimes. Our world also requires on demand printing to be just that supply when needed as required. The computer revolution has led us all to want information when we need it as required. The normal turntime of a digital job is 2-3 days with many being done same day or overnight. Digital printing due to the reduction in production steps from offset printing can normally be turned quicker. This also can be attributed to the ink being dry enough to cut or fold as it comes off the press.
The third main reason is still evolving. Variable data printing or one to one marketing is where the image or text changes from impression to impression. This is still a growing market and will continue to grow as we find ways to refine marketing for individuals versus mass markets. We are not just talking salutations but pictures and text based upon that individuals needs or wants. Although, this has been in existence for many years it is still in early adoption stages and will become more important as education and technology evolves.
There are many other reasons that final users are using digital printing for more of their print needs but this seem to be the main driving factors at this time. Here are some of the products that digital printing is used for in present day(postcards, brochures, posters, flyers, sales sheets).
There are also limitations of digital printing. Be careful in using digital printing where foil stamping or laser ink jet printing is going to be done. The laser printer after digital printing can soften the ink and come off in the laser printer. Inkjet printers are normally fine but should be tested.
Digital printing after foil stamping can also release the foil from the heat of the laser printer. Foil stamping after digital printing should meet with success as long as foil stamping is not going over the digital printing. There are exceptions to this but testing is recommended. Film lamination over digital printing meets with varying success based upon liquid ink versus toner digital printing.
Testing should be done to insure success.

Printing Guy asked:
So you want one guys opinion on color digital printing quality? Here it is.
If you are a mom and pop color copiers are an option although you don’t pay much more for much better quality. Toner based machines no matter how much they cost are still toner particles. Nexpress & IGen3 do a very good job but will still show their toner ancestry on many jobs.
These 2 machines will be very consistent on color from print to print.
The liquid ink possibilities include the DI(Direct Imaging) offset presses and the Indigo digital press family. The DI options are Heidelberg and Ryobi DI machines. These machines can’t do variable data and have a limited ink carrying capacity so can show more issues like ghosting and gradation problems.
They also will depend more on the skill of the pressperson for print to print consistency. The DI can print spot colors and uses temporary plates to produce each job.
The Indigo 3050 digital press has liquid ink technology and rivals offset printing in quality. It can do variable data printing and true spot PMS colors and will be very consistent from print to print. All in all if you want my vote for the best machine it would be the HP 3050 digital press because of the availability of doing variable data printing and quality rivaling offset.
It will be very consistent from print to print and can do spot PMS colors for branding or better color matching. It also doesn’t have that color copy ancestry look and will print screens and solids in a close to offset printing look.

Printing Guy asked:
There are several treatments in printing that are considered special processes. Not many printing companies do this in house and many of these processes are sent out to graphic finishers that specialize in “finishing work”. Foil Stamping, embossing, combination stamping, and die cutting are the most common that we will discuss.
Foil Stamping can be either a flat foil stamp or a combination stamp where the image is raised above or below the surface of the sheet. Foil stamping is the process where foil is transferred to the substrate(paper) through heat and pressure. The pressure is applied through the die that carries the image to a platen of a letterpress usually. The platen is also heated to release the foil to the substrate. Dies are made of metal and the most common metals used are: Brass, Copper and magnesium. Combination stamp dies actually carry the depression of the image while the counter die carries an exact opposite image. The paper is then squeezed between the two with heat to transfer the foil and emboss the image at the same time. Combination stamp dies are more expensive to make but that is the only sum cost difference between flat and combination stamp jobs.
Embossing is basically a very similar process to foil stamping only there is no transfer of foil. The level of the image is either raised(embossing) or lowered(debossing) from the original level of the paper surface. Blind embossing is where the image that is being raised has no ink on it. If you emboss and need to register to the ink it is called color register embossing. On embossing a die and counter die are always needed to be able to emboss the paper between them. This pressure will flatten the paper fibers to help create an image. Heat can be used to enhance the image by actually helping to iron the paper to a smooth finish.
Die Cutting is a process where a steel rule die is used to cut the paper into the desired shape of the die. This is how pocket folders and other shaped pieces are produced. They are usually printed on square or rectangular sheets and then die cut to create the desired shape. Then the die cut piece is scrapped out of the sheet either by the press itself or by hand. Nicks are put in the die to prevent the piece from falling out in the die cutting press itself. Pocket folders, brochures, direct mail, postcards, flyers are all pieces that can be diecut to special shapes.
Kiss Cutting is a diecutting process where the die cuts through the first layer of the material but does not cut through the backing. Most commonly used on label material to help the label to be easily peeled off the backing. Diecuts can be in any shape or size. Kiss cutting is usually done on a letterpress machine such as a Kluge or Heidelberg windmill. It does involve a steel rule die. The pressure is adjusted to cut just through the first surface but not the base material.
All of these processes are done in house at The Odee Company.

Frank Salsa asked:
Over 40% of all print jobs involve offset printing, causing it to be one of the most commonly used printing styles today. But just what is offset printing? Here is some more information to help you understand the printing process.
How Offset Printing Works
Offset printing is a simple, yet effective process. Three cylinders are used to transmit the image onto the paper or other material of choice. The first cylinder has the printing plate, which presents the image in the way it would appear normally for reading. The second cylinder is covered with a rubber blanket. The third cylinder, also known as the impression cylinder, has the paper or other material on which the image will be printed.
To start the printing process, the first cylinder is then given the proper covering of ink. This cylinder then transfers the image onto the rubber blanket of the second cylinder. This causes the image to become reversed or backwards. The second cylinder then transfers the image onto the third cylinder and the final product. This process ensures that the image will appear correctly, and that the final printed product can be read normally.
In some cases, offset printing is known as litho offset printing. This is because offset printing was created from the same technique as lithography. During offset printing, the image and the non-image areas are on the same level. Because water and oil do not mix, printing can be performed from a single surface level and still create the proper image.
Offset Printing Presses
There are two primary types of offset printing presses. The first is a sheet-fed offset printing press. With the press, the printing is completed on individual sheets of paper. The sheets are fed into the press one by one, and then the image is printed on to them.
The second type of offset printing press is a web-fed offset printing press. With this press, the printing is completed on one continuous roll of paper. Once the image has been printed, this paper can then be cut into separate sheets of the sizes desired.
Cost to Set Up and Maintain the Equipment
There is a fairly large investment required to set up offset printing process equipment, as the equipment itself can be quiet expensive. However, once the initial set up has been achieved, the management of offset printing is actually fairly inexpensive, allowing business to sell their products at affordable prices.
How Offset Printing Can Be Used
Offset printing has numerous applications. Since it is used in much of the printing world today, there is a good chance that you have something in your home or office that was printed using offset printing. Books, magazines, brochures, and other reading material are often done through offset printing. Even the daily newspaper that you read was probably printed using offset printing. And if you are considering having any type of major printing completed for your business, there is a good chance that it will be completed using offset printing techniques. Because the printing itself is very affordable, it allows business owners to create materials cost effectively.

Frank Salsa asked:
In our modern business world, there are numerous options when it comes to printing. With new advancements in printing technologies, it can be difficult to understand what printing style is right for you and your business. Learn more about some of the advantages and disadvantages surrounding both digital printing and traditional offset printing.
What the Printing Processes Involve
Offset printing, also known as offset lithography, is still the most commonly used high volume commercial printing option. For this style of printing, the image is placed on a plate, offset onto a second plate, and then onto the actual surface that the consumer wants printed. This printing technology takes advantage of the repulsion nature of water and oil to keep nonprinting areas free from ink.
Digital printing streamlines many of these steps. With digital printing, there is no need to make films or proofs, or even the plates for printing. Instead, the image is transferred directly onto the surface to be printed.
Advantages of Digital Printing
Digital printing has some advantages over traditional offset printing. For starters, the turnaround for prints is much shorter. Secondly, every print looks exactly like the first print, and there is no need to balance colors and water. Digital printing tends to be less expensive to set up, especially if you only need to print a small run. Plus digital printing allows consumers to take advantage of variable data printing, where graphics or copy can be altered on each individual sheet without slowing down the process.
Advantages of Offset Printing
While digital printing offers many advantages, offset printing still has its own advantages. Images tend to be of a higher quality when produced with offset printing. Offset printing can work on a wide variety of mediums, including paper, leather, metal, plastic, and more. If you have a large run to print, offset printing can be cheaper. And many of today’s offset presses utilize computer to plate technology that allows for even better quality than before.
How to Decide
If you are not sure whether offset printing or digital is right for you, here are some printing issues to consider:
• Color – If you only need one or two colors of ink, offset printing can be more cost effective than digital printing, which uses a four-color process. Conversely, if you need more than two colors, then digital printing may be a better choice. And if you must have accurate coloring, then offset coloring tends to be more accurate than digital printing.
• Customization – If you need to customize your final product, digital printing is the most affordable way to go.
• Printing medium – While the options for digital printing are expanding, offset printing still offers the most variety, particularly if you are looking to print on something other than paper.
• Proofs – If you need proofs, digital printing offers you an actual sample, which in contrast, can be expensive to receive from offset printing.
• Quantity – If you have a short run, digital printing is likely to be more cost effective. Larger runs, however, are usually less expensive using offset printing.
• Turnaround – Digital printing generally is faster than offset printing if you have a tight deadline.
Both styles of printing offer their own advantages. If you are unsure, your printing company should be able to recommend the best style of printing for your project.

Printing Guy asked:
How quick can I get it? The answer is changing all the time. It also depends on what you need printed and what printing company you are talking with.
I will attempt to give you some guidelines although there are exceptions to every rule. First of all, let’s take a print job that just needs to be printed and cut. Digital printing can be turned in hours sometimes due to the reduced number of production steps and the ability to handle the job almost immediately.
Most the time you will be able to turn a digital job in 2-3 days if it is simple and possibly same day. You probably will only have the option of a PDF electronic proof or you need to be at the printer to approve the first sheets that come off the press.
The danger is that the ink does not cure. The digital printing manufacturers will tell you that the work can be cut right off the press but that is not true 100% of the time. We would always prefer to let a digital job sit overnight if possible. An offset printing job that does not need anything but printing and cutting can not usually be done the same day. This is due to the ink needing to dry or cure. A job needs to set several hours to insure that the ink is dry.
There are exceptions to this but it brings quality issues into play that customers should accept that they may be getting less than ideal print jobs. If your job requires extra steps to finish you should add extra time in planning the job. Each extra step in the production needs to allow additional time. Does the job score or diecut? Does it need to fold? Does it need to glue or bind? Does it have finishing such as embossing or foil stamping. A good rule of thumb is add an extra day for each process it is going through.
Many times multiple processes such as scoring and folding can be done on the same day but as a rule of thumb give yourself the time to have a day per process. Here are issues that might affect that rule. If you are producing a large quantity of items it maybe more than one day overlap due to some machines or processes being slower than others. Processes that are not totally automated sometimes can definitely slow your turn time. Gluing of pocket folders especially ones with capacity pockets or products that face two directions can decrease automation sometimes and slow the process.
Ask your printer to give you his timeline if deadlines are tight and try to have a “plan b” possibility for difficulties. It is our job to make our clients look good and believe me we don’t like not making you look good because we know you have put your trust in us.
